'Hold On To That Feeling' - Carrie Rodriguez

To whoever asked for it, this is one lyric that I can do. The song is 'El Salvador', from her 2008 album 'She Ain't Me'.

El Salvador
Got your letter from El Salvador
I wish you wrote just a little more
But I guess I'm really missing you today
I know words can mean so much
But I don't need what I can't touch
Been a month tomorrow since you went away
It's been a month tomorrow since you went away
I keep waiting, so long
I've been waiting, too long
So many miles between us
We gotta hold on to that feeling
And get on home
You better get on home
I know you got a job to do
But I can't live my life for you
And today I look much older than I should
I think I might just waste away
If I don't see your pretty face today
I'd swim across that ocean if I could
I'd swim across that ocean if I could
I keep waiting, so long
I've been waiting, too long
So many miles between us
We gotta hold on to that feeling
And get on home
You better get on home
Now you're off to Panama
Just one more place I never saw
While I sit at home wishing you were here
Without you I feel incomplete
Though I'm not the neediest girl you'll meet
But today I cannot help but shed a tear
Today I cannot help but shed a tear
Today I cannot help but shed a tear
So many miles between us
We gotta hold on to that feeling
So many miles between us
We gotta hold on to that feeling

This is a song from an amazingly good, but largely ignored if perhaps only in the UK, album and artist. I have mentioned this album before, including some lyrics - 'Infinite Night' and 'Let Me In':

The new album that I have not heard as yet, but which I really want, is 'Love and Circumstance' (2010).

This is the track listing for it:

1. Big Love
2. Wide River to Cross (feat. Buddy Miller)
3. When I Heard Gypsy Davy Sing
4. Eyes on the Prize
5. Steal Your Love (feat. Bill Frisell)
6. Waltzing's For Dreamers
7. I'm Not for Love (feat. Bill Frisell)
8. I Made a Lover's Prayer (feat. Bill Frisell)
9. I Started Loving You Again (feat. Buddy Miller)
10. Rex's Blues
11. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (feat. Bill Frisell)
12. La Puñalada Trapera

Alright Dynamite - Music I Want in 2009, Part 8

Ooh, just listen!
The Canadian multi-tasking, collective-inspired, ethic is still alive and well I am delighted to report.

A member of Canadian band 'The Paperboys' and also part of the collective 'Outlaw Social' - she plays with both - this is Kendel Carson's second solo album and, as well as being a redoubtable fiddle and violin player, she is a fine vocalist too.

I mentioned Amy Millan's alt-country début solo album 'Honey From The Tombs' (2006) a long time ago and so I now can't wait to hear this too. Nor can I deny my curiosity about Millan's second solo album, currently being recorded I believe. Both of Carson's were largely written and produced by Chip Taylor, with input by Carrie Rodriguez, and that is hardly likely to be a bad thing. The first was this album and I want it too.

That which ails your mind...

I certainly can't always do this, often because I don't have the answer, but this search is an exception. I love lyrics, maybe you know that already...

Let Me In
Make me understand
What it is to be a troubled man
And why you think that I'm the leaving kind
What else it is that ails your mind

Oh let me in, I swear... I'll stay there

Tell me what gets you off
I don't mind if it's rough or soft
Just as long as you can make me moan
I promise I'll never leave you alone

Oh let me in, I swear... I'll stay there

I'm so tired of bailing out
when push comes to shove
Six long years to figure out
all I need is your love

Take me to your cave
I promise you that I won't behave
But I will give you all of my love
And a body sent from heaven above.

Oh let me in, I swear... I'll stay there
Let me in, I swear... I'll stay there
.

This album, let alone this song that is only one amongst many just as good, has rarely been off my personal play list since I got it a few months ago. The songs are good, the instruments equally so, and when she plays fiddle it is to die for.
That is not to say that the UK is in any way short of similarly talented artists, for it is, but there is no harm in sharing...

It is a wonderfully warm and involving album and, before people start asking me about my 'Top ten Albums of 2008', I'll tell you that already I'm minded to sneak in a new category this year. While this does not mean it won't also be included in the former, barring the unthinkable this one will be in the latter!
If you want more lyrics then, while I can't always make promises, asking certainly doesn't hurt anyone.

Let's Fall Back In Love

It is that time of year, unless of course you are south of the equator, when the days get shorter and the nights longer. If you have had a rubbish week at work so far, or are suffering any other similar situation, then I hope that it is some consolation that I share your lack of enthusiasm.

Two cheering thoughts: a good autumn (still a possibility) could well be better than a crappy summer (already confirmed) and more time to find and listen to music, new or old; more releases too and more time to read and write about them. The strange thing is, and this is nothing new, the more gloomy I feel in general the more eclectic and wide-ranging my taste in music becomes but seemingly not to the detriment of what I might regard as my 'core themes'.

Infinite Night
Drug lords, crooked cops, and thieves
Preying on the poor and on the weak
Boys with rifles in their hands
Far too young to understand.

[Chorus]
When it's more than you can bear
Let the silence fill the air.
You get a glimpse of the holy light
Well the sun is just a star
It reminds us of where we are
Just a little part of the infinite night.

Rich hold on to what they've got
Keep them far away from those who have not
Oceans rise and the fires rage on
Too much lost and nothing won.

[Chorus]

Oh looking down from up above
How we live and how we love
And how many days are yet to come... oh...

That track ain't even the half of it and this only confirms my view that, come the end of 2008, my selection of 'best albums' is likely to challenge that of last year in its variety and it would not greatly surprise me if this album [She Ain't Me - Carrie Rodriguez] features in it.

Let Me In
Make me understand
What it is to be a troubled man
And why you think that I'm the leaving kind
What else it is that ails your mind.

Oh let me in, I swear... I'll stay there.

I'm so tired of bailing out when push comes to shove.
Six long years to figure out all I need is your love.

Take me to your cave
I promise you that I won't behave
But I will give you all of my love
And a body sent from heaven above.

Oh let me in, I swear... I'll stay there.
Let me in , I swear... I'll stay there.

Back on planet GB there is no shortage of new music either and Slow Club are an act that I have seen live twice, at Latitude 2007 and Latitude 2008. They are wonderful and this (five-track CD) EP was released on Monday, 1 September by Moshi Moshi (MOMO66) and is an antidote to the rubbish summer weather. You might also find half of Slow Club, Rebecca, moonlighting-live with Noah and The Whale!

1. Let's Fall Back
2 Come On Youth
3. Dance To The Morning Light
4. Summer Shakedown
5. Trick Question

Slow Club on The Lake Stage @ Latitude 2007.

They are certainly unconventional but unquestionably good and, quite frankly, what's not to love?
